5 Great Folding & Adjustable Weight Benches For a Home Gym

Weightlifting benches that fold and are adjustable are a great addition to compact home gyms. They provide tons of exercise options and can be stored in a very small space after use. There are quite a few bad benches out there you want to avoid though. Let’s take a look at the best options.

These benches provide great value for money. They aren’t the absolute best but are the best for specific situations.

How We Picked The Best Benches

  • Value for money: These benches aren’t the absolute best of the best but the best value for money.
  • Adjustability: The benches should be adjustable within a reasonable range. At least from flat to 90 degrees.
  • Ease of Use: The folding and unfolding process should be easy and not take minutes but rather seconds.
  • Load Limit: The load limit is a weak point of folding benches and to get a solid feel, we looked at benches with at least 500 pounds of load capacity.
  • Build Quality: The frame, padding, and upholstery should be of decent quality and long-lasting.

5 Best Folding & Adjustable Weight Benches

Overall Best Value Folding Bench: FlyBird Weight Bench

The Flybird weight benches are known for providing really good value for money. They are a bit cheaper than the well-known brands but provide solid benches for that money.

They have quite a few different types and this can be a bit difficult because they don’t really give recognizable names to their models. So just click the link below to find the exact one i mean here.

This bench is fully adjustable, foldable, and has an 800-pound load capacity for a very reasonable price. That’s a combination that’s hard to beat. It folds up into a really compact package for storage as well.

Besides the backrest being adjustable, the seat is as well so you can find the perfect position for whatever exercise you want to do.

This bench is for people who want a good deal on an all-around good weightlifting bench that also folds. The main downside is the quality of the upholstery which isn’t the greatest.

Overall Best Value Folding Bench

  • Amazing value for money
  • 800-pound load capacity!
  • Folds into a 30″ x 16″ x 9″ package
  • 2″ Thick padding
  • Backrest is adjustable from -30 to +90 degrees
  • Seat is adjustable from 0 to 23 degrees

Best Affordable Folding Bench: Lusper Weight Bench

Basic and affordable. If you need a cheap bench that’s adjustable and folds away, this is a good place to start. There is actually a cheaper option from the same brand but that model only inclines to 69 degrees.

It folds up into a compact package and has a 600-pound load limit which should be plenty for most people who don’t lift too heavily. That 600-pound capacity won’t break the bench but it also won’t feel the most stable and safe. However, if your bodyweight + weight doesn’t break 300 pounds, you’ll be perfectly fine.

This bench won’t last forever so if you want something that’s more durable, you’ll have to spend a bit more. However, as a starting bench, especially if you’re not lifting that heavy yet, this is a great option. The frame will be OK, the padding and upholstery will wear out.

Best Affordable Bench

  • Really Affordable
  • 600-pound load capacity
  • Folds in 5 seconds
  • 1 Year warranty
  • Backrest is adjustable from -30 to +85 degrees in 8 steps
  • With leg rollers

Highest Load Limit: Lusper Zero-gap

This bench’s claim to fame is the lack of a gap between the seat and backrest in all positions. That is a great feature to have but it also has the highest claimed load capacity of any folding adjustable bench.

It’s not the cheapest, especially if you take the fact that this is a pretty much unknown brand into account but it’s well-built and will handle the advertised load.

It also has an extended backrest and the bottom of the backrest is pretty wide. That means more stability for larger people. That’s a great thing since most folding benches are on the smaller side.

The best part of it is that you can lift heavy and then fold this bench away in about 5 seconds. It doesn’t have any wheels to move it around but weighs about 32 pounds so it’s not that hard to lift.

Highest Quality Folding Bench: Body-Solid GFID225

Just need something high-quality and reliable but nothing fancy with special features, this is the bench for you.

With the money you pay for this, you can get better, sturdier benches, even from the same brand but they don’t fold. If the folding part is important, this is the best and longest-lasting bench you’re going to find. And that’s backed up by a lifetime warranty.

This bench weighs 25 kg (55 lbs) which is not super heavy but if you compare it to the other benches, you’ll understand why this one will last. The 500-pound load capacity might not seem like a lot but this bench will feel sturdy under that amount of weight. Other benches might handle that load but not feel the safest.

This pad doesn’t only allow for preacher curls but also many other exercises like hyperextensions and a range of situps and core exercises.

While it has a decent max load capacity of 660 pounds, this bench is best suited for people who lift light to medium weights. You’re sacrificing a bit of build quality for functionality. However, if you’re not a heavy lifter, this bench will do fine and you get a lot of extra exercise options you wouldn’t have with a regular bench.

The padding and upholstery on this bench aren’t that great so they might wear out.

Factors to Consider When Buying a Folding Weight Bench

When buying a folding weight bench, there are several important factors to consider to ensure you make the right choice for your home gym. Here are some key factors to keep in mind:

  • Weight Capacity: Determine the maximum weight the bench can safely support. Ensure it can handle your body weight and the weights you plan to use for your workouts. A bench with a higher weight capacity provides more flexibility for your strength training. Keep in mind, usually the load capacity is a total, static load. That means it includes your body weight and a static, not moving weight.
  • Adjustability: Check the bench’s adjustability options. Look for features like multiple incline/decline positions and adjustable seat positions. A versatile bench allows you to perform a wide range of exercises and target different muscle groups.
  • Build Quality: Assess the quality of materials used in the bench’s construction. Flimsy benches aren’t confidence-inspiring when lifting heavy. Ensure that the bench is well-built and can withstand regular use. The quality of upholstery and padding is also important. Low-quality padding and upholstery will start sagging and tearing quickly.
  • Foldability and Storage: The main advantage of a folding weight bench is its space-saving design. Check how easily the bench folds and whether it can be stored in the amount of space you have for it.
  • Attachments and Accessories: Some folding benches come with additional attachments like leg developers, preacher curl pads, or built-in racks for weights. Depending on your workout goals, these accessories can add versatility to your bench.
  • Warranty: Check if the bench comes with a warranty. A good warranty indicates that the manufacturer stands behind the product’s quality and durability.

Folding vs. Standard Weight Benches

The obvious benefit of a folding bench over a non-folding one is the fact that they use less space when folded up and stored away. But there are a few more pros and cons of folding benches that are a little less obvious.

Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of folding benches as compared to standard ones.

Pros

  • Space-Saving: Foldable benches are excellent for smaller home gyms or multi-purpose spaces as they can be easily folded and stored when not in use.
  • Portability: These benches are usually lighter and more portable, making them suitable for users who may need to move or store their equipment frequently.

Cons

  • Weight Capacity: Foldable benches may have a lower weight capacity compared to non-foldable ones.
  • Stability: While they are generally stable, foldable benches may not be as sturdy as non-foldable counterparts.
  • Durability: The folding mechanism can wear out over time, potentially leading to a shorter lifespan compared to standard benches.
  • Variety: There is limited choice in folding benches compared to standard ones.

The space-saving and portability have to be really important to choose a folding bench over a standard, non-folding bench. If you don’t need a folding bench, I would recommend buying a standard bench instead. However, if it’s all you can fit, a folding bench is definitely better than nothing.
