Average | 315 | 142.9 |
The average user weight limit of all types of exercise bike is 315 lbs. /142.8 kg. Stationary exercise bike weight limits range from 220 lbs. to 400 lbs. (99.8 to 181.4 kg). The most common weight limit for exercise bikes is 300 lbs./136 kg.
Obviously the different models of exercise bikes have different load limits. Some bikes are just built stronger than others. This mainly has to do with the strength of the frame but other parts like the adjustment pegs of the seat for example have to be up to the task as well.
In general, more expensive models tend to have higher load limits. This is because building something stronger simply costs more money. On the other side manufacturers use the user weight limit as a selling point for the higher end models as well. So manufacturers have an incentive to have a higher load limit for the more expensive models.
The biggest differences in load limits can actually be seen between the different types. Not all exercise bikes look the same even though the movement you perform is pretty similar.
Let’s take a look at the different types of stationary bike and their average load limits.
Spin Bike User Weight Limits
Spin bikes are the simplest type of exercise bike that most people know. They’re a frame with a flywheel, pedals and a seat. There are no plastic shrouds so everything is exposed.
The seating position is very aggressive because you’re bent over very far to the point where your back is almost horizontal. That makes this type suitable for really intense workouts.

Upright Bike User Weight Limits
Upright stationary bikes are usually a bit fancier than spin bikes. They have more electronics, plastic shrouds and a more upright seating position. They are a bit more comfortable than spin bikes although not that much more. The seating position is a lot more acceptable for less flexible people or those with lower back problems.
Suggested: Different types of exercise bike
They are still good for high intensity workouts but not as good for standing up on the pedals as spin bikes.

Recumbent Bike Weight Limits
Recumbent bikes are generally much bigger, bulkier and more comfortable than any other type of stationary bike. Recumbent bikes have large comfortable seats with backrests. Instead of under you, the pedals are more out in front. This gives a pretty relaxed seating position. It’s probably the closest to sitting on a couch a workout is ever going to feel.
Suggested: Which muscles does a recumbent bike work?
Because of these characteristics, recumbent bikes are perfect for low and medium intensity workouts. So if you don’t like the really high intensity stuff but do like to have a medium intensity, steady state cardio workout that takes longer, a recumbent bike is perfect.
Because you have the comfy seat and backrest, you’ll still have your hands free to read a book, use your phone or any other activity you prefer.

Air bike weight limits
Air bikes (also known as fan or assault bikes) are a bit of an odd type within exercise bikes. Instead of creating resistance by putting a brake on a flywheel, the resistance is created by spinning a fan blade. The faster the fan blade spins, the higher the resistance becomes.
Suggested: What’s an air bike and should you get one?
This creates a super tough workout that is unmatched by magnetic resistance or a brake pad. Most air bikes have lever arms like an elliptical trainer in addition to the foot pedals. That means you get a full body workout. Since there still is a seat and pedals, I still classify it as a stationary exercise bike.

How to find out the load limit of your exercise bike
Already have an exercise bike and aren’t sure how much weight it can handle? There are two things you can do;
- If you’ve been using it without problems for a long time, you’re likely to be fine. Can I fully recommend you use a bike that isn’t rated for your weight? No, but if it feels sturdy and has been working fine, you can make your own decision.
- Try to find the user manual. It should tell you all the information about your bike. If you don’t have the paper one anymore, it’s likely you can still find it online if it’s from a bigger brand. From a small unknown brand, this might be difficult.
Of course you don’t want to find the limit of your bike by breaking it. So if you have the option to find out by quickly looking up a simple number, it’ll save you from a potentially dangerous situation.
Best exercise bike options for bigger people (350 lbs.+)
Did you already look up the specs for your exercise bike and found out it’s not a good idea for you to use it? Here are the best stationary exercise bikes for you. Up to about 300 lbs. you shouldn’t have many issues. Yes, there are bikes with a lower load limit than that in almost every type but there are a lot of options.
For people between 325 and 350 lbs. that want a stationary exercise bike, you’re going to find the most options in the ‘upright’ and ‘recumbent’ category although there is at least one bike of every type that can handle 350 lbs.

For people over 350 lbs. (meaning you’re looking at a bike that can handle 400 lbs.), there are far fewer options. You’ll only find those bikes in the upright and recumbent categories. Even more, there are only a few brands that offer bikes with this load limit; Life Fitness and Lifespan Fitness. (They are two separate companies though the names sound similar).
Life Fitness makes great bikes with a choice of big or bigger consoles. The customer service is great and these are the same machines you’ll find at a commercial gym or health center. This comes with a very hefty price tag though.
Suggested: How much does a good exercise bike cost?
The most affordable Life Fitness stationary bikes with a 400 lbs. weight limit are the C3 and RS3. Both are very good home stationary bikes.
Lifespan fitness creates much more affordable bikes. That doesn’t come at the expense of quality or features though. Both the C5I (upright) and R5I (recumbent) bikes have a user weight limit of 400 lbs. They are reasonably priced for what they have to offer.
Spin bikes are great for High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). This is a great way to burn more calories in a short period of time. A good interval timer is going to make HIIT workouts much more enjoyable. Check out the GymNext Flex timer. It’s super easy to set up and control contrary to most other interval timers making the set up for any workout a breeze.
